Urine Steroid Hormones

The Urine Steroid Hormone Profile shows how hormones are metabolized and eliminated in urine.

The urine steroid hormone profile measures hormones and hormone metabolites (called conjugates) in a 24-hour sample.  Measuring both hormones and their metabolites can give a better overall picture of hormone production. For example, a urine steroid hormone profile on someone with low salivary cortisol could show normal cortisol production, but high levels of metabolites.  In other words, he's producing enough cortisol, it's just getting broken down into its metabolites very quickly. There are also some metabolites that are important markers for breast cancer risk that can only be measured in urine.

With serum and saliva hormone, it's possible to track hormone release throughout the day - what we call the circadian rhythm. In contrast, the urine steroid hormone profile provides an average of the hormones released in a day.

Why Test Urine Steroids?

To get the best picture of overall steroid hormone production, or to see how supplemented hormones are being broken down by the body, a urine steroid hormone profile is the right choice.
