Hot flashes and night sweats are a sign of sympathetic nervous system instability. They are typically experienced as feelings of intense heat lasting for two to thirty minutes.  Hot flashes may occur infrequently or multiple times through the day, and typically begin prior to menopause and may continue for years after cessation of menstruation.
