irritable bowel

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a disorder that causes abdominal pain and cramping, changes in bowel movements and other gastrointestinal symptoms. The exact cause of IBS is not known, it can occur at any age, and is more common in women. IBS is distinct from inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), where the structure of the bowel is abnormal and symptoms are more severe.
