It’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year–but not if negative emotions take hold of your holidays. Depression may occur at any time of the year, but many factors, including unrealistic expectations, financial pressures, loneliness or excessive commitments can cause stress and anxiety during the months of November and December. However, with a bit of foresight and planning, the holidays can leave you feeling up, not down. Follow these tips for a successful holiday.

Acknowledge Your Feelings

There’s no one right way to feel. Recognize the emotions you’re experience and accept them as valid feelings. It’s OK to take time to cry or express your feelings. You can’t force yourself to be happy just because it’s the holiday season. By accepting your emotions, you empower yourself to address them appropriately.

Find a Buddy (Or Two)

If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They can offer support and companionship. Pad yourself with extra layers of emotional resilience by discussing in advance specific concerns you have with a counsellor, or friend (preferably one who doesn’t gossip).

Be Realistic

From decorating to finding the perfect gifts, the holidays can be overwhelming. Having realistic expectations of those around you and setting realistic expectations for yourself can help you to manage the chaos of the holiday season. The holidays don’t have to be perfect or just like last year.

Maintain Healthy Balance

Don’t abandon healthy habits. Don’t let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. The more stress you are under, the less time it feels like you have. This will lead to increased irritation and stress. Managing your stress via healthy habits such as regular exercise and getting enough sleep will allow your body to recover during this busy season.
