We are exposed to environmental pollutants, pesticides, heavy metals and chemicals during our day-to-day activity; these toxins may be stored in our tissues. A healthy body is capable of eliminating the toxic substances generated by normal functioning as well as toxins imposed on it by our environment. However, the buildup of these toxins decreases our ability to clear the burden effectively and may affect our immune system function, mood, metabolism and ability to fight disease.

We have a suite of organs that work together to rid the body of toxins: liver, kidneys, colon, lymphatic system, skin and lungs. The liver detoxifies the blood by making pollutants and hormones water-soluble for excretion by urine.  It also produces bile to help with excretion of fat-soluble pollutants via stool, and extracts essential vitamins and minerals the body needs for detox. The kidneys work with the liver to siphon out toxins and other waste from the body.

The lymphatic system consists of lymph vessels that drain all tissues and also interconnects the liver, kidneys, spleen and lymph nodes. The lymphatic fluid, circulating in the lymph system, plays a crucial role in detoxification and defense. Regular sweating and exercise help to support the lymphatic system and keep it working smoothly. The skin is the largest organ on the team and plays an important role in the elimination of toxins in the form of sweat thereby also supporting the lymph system.  Last but not least, we come to the lungs. Our lungs play a key role in regulating our pH, by regulating the disposal of carbon dioxide.  In turn, the pH of our tissues helps regulate the elimination of cellular wastes.

There are a number of ways you can help to support and improve the function of all these organs to help your body manage and reduce its toxic load. Here are some lifestyle and diet changes that will help you to maintain these important organs.

  • Drink Water

Water helps every single cell excrete toxins and flush out waste through our urine and bowels, as well as through our skin via sweat.

  • Eat More Fibre

Fibre supports the regular function of the digestive system which helps the liver flush toxins from the body. Increasing your fiber intake can also help with weight management. Check out this list of high fibre foods to get you started.

  • Sweat Daily

Your skin is the largest detox organ on your body and it eliminates a number of toxins through perspiration. When you sweat daily, you’re helping to support the removal of these toxins. A lack of exercise and a poor diet can also impair the lymphatic system which supports the immune system.

  • Dry Brush

Dry brushing the body regularly helps to increase circulation and lymphatic drainage, encouraging the discharge of toxins and metabolic waste.

  • Breathe Deeply

Regular deep breathing helps you relax, promotes lymphatic flow and balances the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, which are key for optimal detox.

Talk to your healthcare provider about tests that can help to identify your toxic load such as hair element testing and additional ways to support detoxification.
